About Sacramento

Sacramento is a hidden gem among California's cities. As the oldest incorporated city in the state, Sacramento has a rich history reflected in the city's architecture and mix of cultures. As the state capitol of California, Sacramento is a modern city that visitors an interesting mix of eating, shopping and entertainment options, while still retaining a relaxed feel much different from that of Los Angeles or San Francisco Sacramento's Mediterranean climate makes it a perfect year-round destination, as it stays warm in the winter, yet cool and breezy in the summer.

Sacramento's history incorporates its native, Spanish and Anglo pasts. The Maidu tribe, who lived and farmed in the rich Sacramento Valley, first settled the area. In the 17th century, the Spanish began to explore the area and gave the Sacramento River, the city's namesake, and its title. Americans first came to the Sacramento area in 1839, attracted to the tales of gold coming out of the west, and established the town that, in 1854, would become the seat of government for the new state of California.

Many of the major tourist attractions in Sacramento reflect the area's diverse history. The Crocker Art Museum, the oldest art museum in the American West, displays an excellent collection of California art and photography. Old Sacramento, located near the city center on the Sacramento River, is a National Historic Landmark District that contains many of Sacramento's best museums, such as the California Railroad Museum and the California State Military Museum. Old Sacramento is also one of the city's finest shopping and dining destinations, with many boutiques and cafes housed in unique historic buildings. Day trips to the area's historic gold-mining district, located outside of Sacramento along Highway 49, are another popular way to learn about the region's history and culture.

Getting to Sacramento is simple. Domestic and international flights travel frequently to and from Sacramento International Airport. Taxis and the Yolobus service offer inexpensive and convenient transport to downtown and elsewhere in Sacramento from the airport. Sacramento's location on Interstate 5, the West Coast's major north-south highway, means that it is convenient to reach the city from both northern and southern California. The city is also a stop on major railroad routes. Those wanting to see the country at a relaxed, slower pace can reach Sacramento on Amtrak's Coast Starlight and California Zephyr routes, which stops at Sacramento's historic central train depot.
